Author Talk - Robert Burns

Robert Burns, a Washington native, will discuss his latest book, "Rebels in the Wild: The Equality Colony and the Taming of American Capitalism," at Village Books in Bellingham on August 14 at 6 p.m. in the Readings Gallery.

"Rebels in the Wild" tells the extraordinary story of a socialist commune that was located about 12 miles south of Bellingham at the turn of the 20th century. Burns portrays the colorful cast of characters who were responsible for the rise and fall of the Equality colony and explains the experimental community’s wider importance in local and national history.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
