Naturalist Hike - Autumn Ecology with Northwest Natura

Join me in late October for a walk in the woods to talk about autumn ecology including the wild ways nutrients are recycled and what that has to do with mushrooms, identifying fruiting bodies of mushrooms we find and talking about their natural history, why and how the leaves change color, plant dormancy, and so much more!

This is a walk in the woods where we’ll be stopping a lot to identify plants, fungi, lichen, and wildlife tracks that we may find. There is no foraging allowed at this forest reserve. We will take only photos and leave only footprints.

Naturalist Hikes are “anything goes” topics-wise. The subtitle is “Autumn Ecology”, but that basically means we’ll be learning all about what we find at this time of year in a biodiverse forest preserve.

The nature reserve gives us immense insight into what natural areas of the PNW look like when they’re thriving. Prepare to see beautiful shades of green, red, orange and yellow + lots of fungi! Please register via event website

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
