The Quartertones

Founded with a passion for preserving and sharing the rich traditions of Middle Eastern music, The Quartertones brings together musicians from diverse backgrounds to celebrate the artistry and timeless beauty of the Arabic musical tradition. Inspired by expressive melodies, intricate rhythms, and the rich world of maqamat—the ensemble presents performances that are both authentic and inviting.

The Quartertones performs a repertoire spanning beloved Arabic classics, traditional instrumental works, and original arrangements. Each performance explores a variety of maqamat, taking audiences on a musical journey through moods and landscapes that have shaped the music of the Middle East for centuries.

Whether introducing listeners to Arabic music for the first time or welcoming those who have cherished it for years, The Quartertones strives to create concerts that inspire curiosity, foster cultural appreciation, and celebrate music as a timeless bridge between cultures.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
