BMC Night Beat with Millie and the Mentshn

Millie and The Mentshn – Bellingham’s favorite Klezmer band – are reviving their show “Homeland to Heartland”! Not since 2005 have we had the chance to hear the storytelling, music and memories of Millie’s ancestors, who kept very detailed and literate diaries and photos of their experiences both in the Old Country and the New World.

Classically trained musicians Millie Johnson, soprano and director, Susan Ediger Blum, clarinet, Ken Bronstein, oboe, Phil Heaven, viola/violin, Lou Lippman, piano, and Warren Palken, percussion/drums, bring a program that follows the immigration of Jews to America from Lithuania at the end of the 1800s to the late 1940s. It speaks of love, work, prayer, family, strength, and tradition.

The full-length BMC Night Beat includes slides from the Shtetl (village), the ship voyage, and arriving and settling in the US, $20 suggested donation; students always free.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
