Outdoor Fire-Making & Bread-Baking with Northwest Natura

Escape into the woods and reconnect with nature! In this unique workshop, you’ll learn the timeless skills of fire-making (without a lighter!) and bread-baking while enjoying crackling fires, good company, and a beautiful PNW mossy woodland next to the Nooksack River at Boulder Creek.

Build your own fire without a lighter using foraged materials you collected from the land, rain or shine. Learn how to carve feathersticks for starting a fire. Learn how to use a ferro rod and natural materials to catch a flame. Learn how to build a baking fire with materials you found in the woods. Bake bread from start to finish over a fire in a Dutch oven.

Participants will be in groups of 2-4, and each group has their own firepit. Each person in your group plays a significant role in creating bread from scratch. Learn the steps to baking, dutch oven basics, and how to “tell the temperature” of your oven without a thermometer.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
