Wild Whatcom Halloween Field Trip: Fungus Among Us

Our area is well known for its diverse bounty of incredible fungi that pop up each autumn. Join naturalists from Wild Whatcom, and our favorite mushroom experts from the Northwest Mushroomers Association, Pam Borso and Fred Rhoades, for a family friendly forest exploration and mushroom identification bonanza!

We will discuss the basics of fungi biology and the local mushrooms we are likely to see, review the best practices of mushroom foraging, then hit the trail to spend the majority of our time together searching for the fantastic fungi that grow abundantly around Lake Padden.

Feel free to come in your Halloween Costumes - extra candy if your costume is mushroom themed! This is an event for adults and children ages 4-5 and up, as it does involve some initial standing around and chatting/listening, which can be challenging for little ones excited to get exploring quickly. Kate and Holly from Wild Whatcom will be there to facilitate mushroom hunting with younger kids!

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
