On Resilience: Stories of Climate Adaptation Across Washington's Landscapes

Washington State Poet Laureate Derek Sheffield will join ten poets from across the state for “On Resilience: Stories of Climate Adaptation Across Washington's Landscapes,” a public reading at the Village Books Fairhaven.

The evening brings together poets from the Salish Sea to the Cascades to the Columbia Plateau to read work rooted in the places they call home: coastlines, rivers, forests, farmland, and cities reshaped by wildfire, drought, flood, and sea-level rise.

The poems illuminate how people, plants, animals, and watersheds are adapting, and what it will take to live well in a changing Washington. Harriet Morgan, Climate Change Coordinator for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, will open the evening.

Starts: December 02, 2026

Time: 6 p.m.

Admission: $6.24

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
