Top Dog-Friendly Hikes in Bellingham & Whatcom County

Dogs love Bellingham, and for good reason! The area has tons of dog-friendly hiking trails for every activity level, whether you have an older pup just looking for a good sniff or a hyper puppy who needs an extended romp around the woods. Choose from forested trails, alpine treks, and serene urban paths located in the heart of town. Check guidelines at each location for rules about off-leash and on-leash areas. Make sure to always pack out your trash (i.e. don't forget Fido's poop bags!) and be sure to recreate responsibly

2 miles roundtrip 

This popular trail in the Chuckanut Mountains is relatively steep and takes you and your doggo to charming Fragrance Lake. There is a nice overlook at 9/10 of a mile. Paid parking is lcoated across from the Larrabee State Park entrance. Discover pass is required. 

5 miles roundtrip 

A network of trails begins on the southern part of the Chuckanut Mountains and leads to this prominent viewpoint, offering sweeping views of the San Juan Islands. The location is unique in that it's one of the only locations where the Chuckanut mountains meet the Salish Sea. 

Find access to the Oyster Dome Trailhead from Chuckanut Drive, a few miles south of Larrabee State Park, and also at the Samish Overlook. Read more and get directions here

7+ miles of trail

Lake Padden is located in the southern part of Bellingham, in easy reach of Fairhaven Village and downtown. Meander along the lakeside trail and wind through lush forest while taking in the local wildlife. The park also offers an off-leash dog area perfect for getting out extra zoomies. 

1-6 miles roundtrip

This trail, located at Artist Point in the Mount Baker Wilderness, offers incredible views and stunning fall colors. The first mile of this dog-friendly trail is nearly level, although on the side of a steep slope. It takes you to a junction with a closer view of Mt. Baker. At this point the trail splits and ambitious hikers can continue to Chains Lakes or opt for the longer Ptarmigan Ridge (4-5 more miles).

6 miles of trails

Located near Western Washington University, the Sehome Hill Arboretum boasts a network of forested trails great for tuckering out your pup. The arboretum also offers a lookout tower perfect for viewing sunsets or catching a birds-eye glimpse of town.

8 miles of trails

Home to over 8 miles of mixed-use hiking and biking trails, Lookout Mountain offers a quiet place to explore with your furry friend among the trees. The trailhead is located next to Sudden Valley, just a short drive from the heart of Bellingham. Find lush forest vibes, an overlook area, and a waterfall. 

Multiple trail options 

Drive around the north end of Lake Whatcom in Bellingham to access the parking lot and trailheads for both Hertz and Chanterelle Trails. Choose the flat Hertz Trail along the lake or opt for the Chanterelle Trail to gain elevation and views.
