Mayor Lund, City Transportation Official to Attend Safe Streets Documentary Screening in Bellingham

Pickford Film Center, in partnership with Walk & Roll Bellingham, will present a special screening of Changing Lanes (2025) on Thursday, April 9, 2026. The event will be followed by a live discussion featuring Bellingham Mayor Kim Lund and Assistant Director for Transportation Tim Hohmann — a rare opportunity for community members to engage directly with city leaders about Bellingham’s transportation future.

Changing Lanes documents a grassroots movement in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, sparked by the tragic death of a beloved teacher in a hit-and-run accident. The film features interviews with politicians, activists, urban planners, and cultural figures, including David Byrne and former NYC Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan.

Following the screening, Walk & Roll Bellingham will host Mayor Lund and Assistant Director Hohmann for a discussion about how Bellingham is planning safer, more vibrant streets — and how community members can help ensure those plans become a reality. A free bike valet will be available at the venue for the evening.

“Though we’re not as feisty as New Yorkers, it’s great to know Bellingham is not alone in our passion for safe streets,” said Laura Weiss of Walk & Roll Bellingham. “Well-designed streets lead to fewer collisions, are accessible to people of all ages and abilities, and generate higher revenues for businesses. Thankfully, there are simple solutions that not only make our streets safer but also make our public spaces more enjoyable – we just have to fight for them.”

Changing Lanes runs 1 hour and 14 minutes. The post-film discussion will begin immediately following the screening.

About Walk & Roll Bellingham

Walk & Roll Bellingham is a local advocacy organization dedicated to making Bellingham’s streets safer and more accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
