Open Call to Join the Sustainable Connections Board of Directors

Sustainable Connections, a 501(c)3 nonprofit with locations in Bellingham and Everson, WA, is excited to announce an open call for individuals interested in serving on their board of directors. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing a regenerative local economy that builds community, strengthens food systems, catalyzes climate solutions, and expands access to housing in NW Washington, Sustainable Connections is committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in their leadership.

Sustainable Connections strongly believes that diverse perspectives and backgrounds enrich their decision-making processes and help them better achieve their vision of informed and engaged communities that are equipped to thrive during times of stability and are resilient in their ability to navigate challenges and crises.

The nonprofit organization is seeking passionate and dedicated individuals who are committed to making a positive impact. The ideal board member possesses a strong belief in the mission and a commitment to promoting social change. Sustainable Connections particularly encourages individuals from underrepresented communities to apply, including but not limited to those from diverse racial, ethnic, gender, age, socioeconomic, disability, and LGBTQ+ backgrounds.

Responsibilities of board members include:

  • Providing strategic guidance and oversight to advance the organization’s mission.
  • Collaborating with fellow board members to develop and review policies and strategic plans.
  • Actively participating in board meetings, committee work, and organizational events.
  • Supporting fundraising efforts and leveraging personal networks to secure resources.
  • Advocating for the organization’s mission and engaging with the community.

Stipends are available for board members. To encourage a more diverse set of community voices on 501(c)3 nonprofit boards, the Mount Baker Foundation and Whatcom Family & Community Network have established a fund from which board or advisory members of nonprofits may request stipends and/or reimbursement for mileage and childcare.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
