Allied Arts of Whatcom County Executive Director Kelly Hart Announces Departure

After 17 years of dedicated leadership, Kelly Hart has announced that she will step down as executive director of Allied Arts of Whatcom County in February 2026.

During her tenure, Kelly has guided the nearly 50-year-old organization through tremendous growth and innovation. Under her leadership, Allied Arts:

  • Established the Arts Supply Thrift Store, expanding it four times due to its popularity with local artists,

  • Created RARE: The Recycled Arts Resource Expo,

  • Partnered with Whatcom READS on its annual Arts Challenge,

  • Published the Whatcom Arts & Culture Guide, representing organizations countywide,

  • Expanded the Allied Arts Education Program, including Since Time Immemorial and social justice curriculum,

  • Oversaw the move to a new office and gallery space after 30 years,

  • Launched new community-focused programs, including partnerships with veterans and dementia support organizations and

  • Helped establish the SeaFeast Maritime Festival and Whatcom Cultural Arts Festival.

In 2023, Allied Arts was honored with a Washington State Governor's Arts and Heritage Award.

“The arts are at the heart of community,” Kelly said. “I am deeply proud of what we’ve built together and grateful to the staff, board, artists and community members who made it possible. While I am relocating to Olympia to be closer to family, Allied Arts will always hold a piece of my heart.”

Board President Scott Ward shared: “Kelly’s leadership has transformed Allied Arts into a stronger, more dynamic organization that serves the entire community. Her vision, passion and commitment to the arts will leave a lasting legacy in Whatcom County. We are deeply grateful for her years of service.”

Kelly will work with the board and staff to ensure a smooth transition for the organization and its members. The Board of Directors is developing a succession plan. Details will be announced soon.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
