Even though the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra isn’t at the concert hall, it is still here for our community. The BSO has been busy this past month bringing the joy of music from their homes to yours. The BSO is reaching thousands of people through their online At Home with the BSO video performances and Learn At Home! lessons - one features BSO Music Director Yaniv Attar teaching kids how to conduct.
The BSO is a proud participant and a founding member of the new Whatcom Arts Project, a group of over 30 community arts nonprofits. The goal of the Whatcom Arts Project is to reach our community during this time of need to provide hope, entertainment, learning opportunities, and a sense of togetherness. Each week, the BSO posts learning activities and videos on their website and to social media as part of the Whatcom Arts Project. “It is my hope that during this time we can reach our community to uplift each other - from our homes, to yours,” says Gail Ridenour, Executive Director of the BSO.
In February, the BSO heard from a supporter that the Bellingham Public Schools Foundation was seeking funds to finish purchasing instruments for every 5th grader as part of the Bellingham School District’s 5th grade strings program. Kim Lund, Executive Director for the Bellingham Public Schools Foundation, explained, “An instrument for every child in the 5th Grade would be a game changer for music education in our community!” The Bellingham Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors was enthusiastic to support this project, donating $5,000 to help ensure each student has an instrument. The BSO is committed to our community and bringing the gift of music to our youth through this and other programs. Each year, the BSO does over 90 free in-school performances throughout Whatcom County, reaching thousands of students.
