Birch Bay Sand Sculpture Competition Presented by WECU Set to Dazzle August 3

The Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to announce the annual Birch Bay Sand Sculpture Competition, proudly sponsored by WECU, taking place Saturday, August 3. This beloved, long-standing community event promises a weekend brimming with excitement, creativity, and family fun.

The Sand Sculpture Competition will see competitors from diverse walks of life showcasing their sculpting skills on the shores of Birch Bay. Participants can pre-register online or sign up in person the day of the event. Entry is free, and sculptors will vie for an array of fantastic prizes, including one-of-a-kind, locally crafted metal art trophies, gift cards to local businesses, beach supplies, and more.

“It’s always a big weekend in Birch Bay,” said Sacha Sanguinetti, the event coordinator for the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce. “The Sand Sculpture Competition is a highlight, drawing talented artists and enthusiastic spectators alike to celebrate our vibrant community.”

There aren’t very many rules to the competition; each team gets up to 20-by-20-feet to work with, they must mark their sculpture area with a stick received at check-in, they can use nothing but sand for structural support, they must clean up any unnatural materials before leaving, and most importantly — have fun.

This year, the goal is to have more teams compete than ever before, setting a record for participation. Longtime participant Ward Romans, shared, “My family and I have been traveling to compete in the Sand Sculpture Contest for years. We love setting up camp on the beach and hanging out. It’s something we look forward to every summer. Walking around and checking out the creations is almost as much fun as being a part of a team!”

But the fun doesn’t stop there. The competition is part of a larger weekend of festivities that include an array of vendors, delectable food options, and live music at the Beach Park located right in the center of the bay on Birch Bay Drive. Spectators are encouraged to come and check out the creations as they are being made and upon completion, soaking in the artistry and creativity on display. The excitement continues Sunday, August 4, with the highly anticipated Rollback Weekend Car Show, adding a touch of classic charm and nostalgia to the weekend’s events.

In an exciting addition to this year's festivities, a treasure hunt has been introduced! The Chamber and WECU will hide 1,000 wooden coins throughout the area. When found, these coins can be turned in at the WECU booth at the Beach Park for special prizes. This treasure hunt was added to expand the festivities and make the weekend bigger, better, and more fun for everyone.

“We are incredibly excited to sponsor the Birch Bay Sand Sculpture Competition once again,” said Keith Mader, Director of PR at WECU. “This event perfectly embodies the spirit of community and creativity that we at WECU are so passionate about supporting. It’s always a joy to see families and individuals coming together to create such amazing works of art and to share in the fun and camaraderie that this event fosters. We look forward to another record-breaking year of participation and can’t wait to see the incredible sand creations that will be built on August 3.” The Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce hopes that the Sand Sculpture Competition will inspire people to come out and play in the sand all summer long. Join us for an unforgettable weekend at Birch Bay, where creativity meets community!

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
