Birch Bay Takes Aims at GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ Title for Largest Polar Bear Dip

The Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Blaine Birch Bay Park and Recreation District 2 and Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism, is forging ahead with its GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ attempt for the largest Polar Bear Dip set for New Year’s Day, January 1, 2026, along the stunning shoreline of Birch Bay, Washington.

Over the weekend the previous record record—held by Most, Czech Republic, with 2,461 participants —was officially broken in Norway by a group of brave (and very cold) plungers. As a result, the new record to beat is 3,134 participants.

Sure, the bar has been raised – but that only makes the challenge more exciting. Birch Bay isn’t aiming for “pretty good,” the goal is legendary! With no other known attempts currently planned the community now has a clear target to rally around. It’s time to show Norway how Birch Bay does winter – with heart, hype and a whole lot of community spirit.

Birch Bay’s 43rd Annual Polar Bear Plunge is expected to draw thousands of participants and spectators, with hopes of surpassing the newly established record and make history on Washington’s Salish Sea shoreline.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
