Four Western Washington University Men's Basketball Players Earn Academic Awards from National Association of Basketball Coaches

Four Western Washington University Men’s Basketball student-athletes have been recognized for their academic excellence as members of the 2020-21 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court.

WWU student-athletes RJ Secrest (Silverdale, WA/Central Kitsap), Ivan Bullock (Orcas Island, WA), Daniel Hornbuckle (Fairbanks, AK/Portland CC) and Lucas Holden (Anaheim Hills, CA/Santiago Canyon College) were all recognized for their excellence in the classroom.

“I am very proud of the success these four student-athletes have achieved in the classroom, providing great academic leadership in our program,” said WWU head coach Tony Dominguez.

This marks the second consecutive season that Secrest has been selected to the NABC Honors Court. The junior guard carries a 3.49 cumulative GPA while pursuing a double major in finance and marketing.

Secrest and Bullock were also selected to the 2020-21 GNAC All-Academic Team, and Holden earned the prestigious GNAC FAR Award while maintaining a 3.88 GPA as a Chemistry major. Bullock carries a 3.68 GPA double majoring in Kinesiology and Behavioral Neuroscience.

A total of 19 GNAC men’s basketball players earned the NABC Honors Court award for 2020-21.

The NABC Honors Court highlights the talents and gifts that these student-athletes displayed on the court and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom. To be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria.

Nominees to the NABC Honors Court must be of junior academic standing or greater, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher, must have been at the nominating institution for at least one year, and must be a member of an NCAA or NAIA program with an NABC member coach.

All four Vikings are juniors in the classroom as they close in on achieving their undergraduate degrees at WWU. Western did not play any games during the 2020-21 season due to the global pandemic but will take the court during the upcoming season as the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) champions after winning the conference tournament in March 2019.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
