World-renowned cellist Joshua Roman joins Whatcom Symphony Orchestra in Bellingham, playing Elgar's Concerto for Cello, on Sunday, May 21 at 3:00 p.m. at the Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham, WA.
Joshua Roman is a Pacific Northwest legend: he was appointed principal cellist of the Seattle Symphony at the age of 22, the youngest principal chair ever for that orchestra. In November of 2016, Joshua performed all six of J.S. Bach's Suites for Solo Cello in a TED presentation which was watched by just under one million viewers in real time and has continued to be shared and viewed since. Now in the prime of his solo career, he returns to Whatcom County for the third time, having previously performed with the Bellingham Festival of Music.
Elgar's Concerto for Cello, a contemplative, haunting work, is considered a cornerstone in the solo cello repertoire. Brahms' Symphony No. 1, a piece that Brahms described as "21 years in the making," from initial sketches to the final version, finishes the concert.
