Sustainable Connections announces a place making tour de force with the KAPOW Pop-Up Plaza, June 2-3, 2017. The event is open and free to the public.
The State Street Herald parking lot will transform into a public platform for place making with the KAPOW Pop-Up Plaza. This temporary take over will illustrate the economic potential and benefit of activating unproductive spaces while creating a more vibrant downtown. The 2016 KAPOW Place making Competition projects will be brought to life along State Street’s sidewalks, where everyone can experience, explore, and interact with different place making tactics. With music, art, and fun; Bellinghamsters can come together to learn, explore and engage in the transformation of place.
“Pop-Up Plaza is all about showcasing the value of open space in our downtown core,” said Rose Lathrop, Green Building & Smart Growth Manager for Sustainable Connections. “We have an opportunity to utilize space for connection and encouraging a vibrant and healthy Bellingham. Come down to experience the power (and fun!) of place making.”
Friday night, during Artwalk, features live performance artists, painting, and music. Be sure to bid on your favorite door painted by one of 5 local artists. Saturday will be a full day of interactive arts and entertainment. Participate in morning yoga starting at 10 a.m. or have your kids sign up for the talent show. Pop-Up Plaza will be complete with yard games, crafts, community mural painting, and fun for the whole family. Experience KAPOW winners Bellingham Hops Debut, State of the Solar System, Uuntzbrella, and the bioluminescent bike rack.
As always, amazing local food and drink will also be available Friday night at the Plaza and just around the corner at the Farmers Market all Saturday. This event was generously supported by the Whatcom Community Foundation and the Whatcom County Association of Realtors.
