Read George Takei’s Graphic Memoir with the West Coast’s Biggest Book Club

This spring, Bellingham Public Library and Whatcom County Library System invite you to take part in One Book, One Coast, a shared reading initiative connecting more than 190 library systems across California, Oregon and Washington, including 25 in Washington state.

Organized by LA County Library, One Book, One Coast brings together West Coast library systems for a shared community reading program that celebrates literacy, learning, community and civil discourse. All participating libraries will read and discuss They Called Us Enemy  by actor/author/activist George Takei with physical copies of the book available to borrow now and unlimited digital copies of the eBook in English and Spanish available from April 1 through June 6 on the Libby app by Overdrive.

A bestselling graphic memoir, They Called Us Enemy recounts Takei’s childhood as a Japanese American imprisoned within American incarceration camps during World War II. It reflects on civil liberties, democracy, and what it means to be American — both historically and today.

By connecting readers across three states through one shared title, One Book, One Coast highlights the power of libraries and stories in bringing people together for conversation and reflection, exploring a complex chapter of our nation’s history together through thoughtful and respectful dialogue.

Other western Washington libraries participating in One Book, One Coast include Mount Vernon City Library, Port Townsend Public Library, Sno-Isle Libraries, Seattle Public Library, Everett Public Library, King County Library System, Pierce County Library and Tacoma Public Library. See the full list of participating library systems at LACountyLibrary.org/oboc.

What about Whatcom READS?

While similar in concept, One Book, One Coast is not a replacement for Whatcom READS, which is presented by all the public and academic libraries in Bellingham and Whatcom County and community partner Village Books. Whatcom READS just completed its 18th season with programs celebrating this year’s featured book, Solito: A Memoir by Javier Zamora. For Whatcom READS 2026-2027 season, we are reading and discussing I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
