Whatcom Women in Business seeks nominations for the 2021 “Professional Woman of the Year” and “Community Legacy Award"

The Professional Woman of the Year (PWOTY) award is a unique recognition opportunity, honoring the incredible contributions of local Whatcom County women in business. Every year, the Whatcom Women of Bussiness ask the public to submit nominations to highlight amazing women playing pivotal roles in their business and our community. These individuals develop future leaders, mentor our children and peers, and give back in ways that impact us all. 2020 was a most unusual year in so many ways, and particularly so given the impact on businesses at times. Think about who did a great job facing up to that adversity despite the odds?

Whatcom Women in Business is comprised of business owners and managers developing and maintaining proactive role models within the organization and the community at large. Through teaching, learning, leadership and peer support, we strive to exemplify and promote the four areas we honor- leadership, professionalism, mentoring, and community.

The Community Legacy Award (CLA) is a unique recognition opportunity, honoring a member of our community who stands out as having made a lifetime of exceptional contributions and a lasting impact on our community through decades of dedication.

Nomination forms are online at the Whatcom Women in Business website. Nominations are due by May 31st, 2021.

Whatcom Women in Business will announce PWOTY & CLA at our annual banquet and scholarship fundraiser auction in January 2022 at the Four Points by Sheraton.

This year, Whatcom Women in Business will also be awarding three (3) $5,000.00 scholarships to women entering higher education including but not limited to technical or trade school, beauty school, community college or university. Applicants must be a high school graduate by Spring 2021 and a current Whatcom County resident or student in Whatcom County. WWIB considers scholarship applications from individuals who identify as women, regardless of the gender assigned at birth.

Applications are due by March 31st, 2021, and will be carefully reviewed by our Scholarship Committee. Applicants must be available for an interview on Saturday, April 17th, 2021. Finalists are selected based on their application, goals, community involvement and volunteerism, extra-curricular activities, work experience as well as financial need. See application at www.wwib.org for further instructions.

The finalists will be contacted to schedule an interview, non-finalists will receive a notification letter. Selected scholarship recipients will be required to volunteer 10 hours with Whatcom Women in Business prior to November 30th, 2021. Applicants may only receive one scholarship. If an applicant does not receive a scholarship one year, they may apply again. Payments are sent directly to each school or university.

Whatcom Women in Business is comprised of business owners and managers interested in developing and maintaining proactive roles within the organization and the community at large. Through teaching, learning, leadership and peer support, we strive to exemplify and promote the four areas we honor- leadership, professionalism, mentoring, and community.         We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
