It's no secret that Taylor Dock, located just outside of Historic Fairhaven Village in Bellingham, is one of the most popular spots in Whatcom County. Taylor Dock and the connecting Taylor Boardwalk allow visitors and locals to stroll over the open blue waters of Bellingham Bay. This quarter-mile boardwalk and restored trestle are part of the South Bay Trail, which connects Fairhaven Village Green to Boulevard Park and continues all the way to downtown Bellingham. A walk along Taylor Boardwalk is one of the best ways to experience an excellent slice of what Bellingham has to offer. There are benches along the way, so grab a seat and soak in the views.
You can access Taylor Dock by walking the pedestrian and bike trail beginning at 10th and Mill Street in Fairhaven Village. You can also access the dock from the other side, by beginning at Boulevard Park (which has a parking lot) and walking south along the boardwalk.
Near the dock you'll find a gazebo perfect for taking photos. You'll also find benches and a restroom. If you're hungry or in need of a drink, drop by Keenan's at the Pier, attached to the nearby Chrysalis Inn & Spa, just a short walk from the dock.
As you walk along the elevated boardwalk, views to the north of Bellingham afford peeks of the peaks. On clear days, in the distance, the Canadian Border Peaks can be seen rising above the skyline. Interesting aspects of the geologic history of the region are visible from this man-made walkway. Look around.
The exposure on the dock is worth it. It's a place where people go to see and be seen. If you're into people watching, this is one of the best places in B'ham to do it. Go alone, grab a friend or get a group together - everyone's heading to the dock for a walk, go see for yourself.
Once you make your way across the converted pilings and reach land again, you will find yourself at the Boulevard Park Woods Coffee. This is a great place to grab a cup of joe to-go or sit and enjoy a latte or snack while relaxing in the comfort of the cozy surroundings. The views of the bay and beyond from within and outside (next to the outdoor fireplace) are astounding.
Once you have your coffee, keep walking to explore adjacent Boulevard Park. Kids will enjoy the Pirate Playground and its "walk the plank" element. The park also has picnic tables, benches, and grassy areas great for spreading out a blanket.
There are many other interesting features that you'll find here, including a group of rocks scattered on the north end of the park. The flat, smooth surface of the tallest rock makes for a great slide - if you can reach the summit.
On the hunt for an epic sunset photo? If the weather's right, Taylor Dock is an incredible spot to catch the sun going down. Sit on a bench, or dangle your legs off the dock and watch as the sky comes alive over the bay. When you're done, head to Fairhaven Village for dinner or drinks.
