SPARK Museum Presents Out of the Air: The Electrifying Theremin
Renowned Virtuoso Dennis James Brings Historic Electronic Instrument to Life

On Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 7:00 p.m., the SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention will present Out of the Air: The Electrifying Theremin, an immersive, projection-illustrated “informance” by internationally acclaimed theremin virtuoso and scholar Dennis James.
“James has to be heard to be believed,” said Charlie Bryan, Director of Operations at SPARK Museum. “His way with the instrument is virtually magical.”
Blending live performance with vivid historical imagery, The Electrifying Theremin explores the artistry, science, and cultural impact of one of the world’s first electronic instruments.
The program features works by George Gershwin and Serge Rachmaninoff, alongside compelling narratives about the theremin’s mysterious inventor, Leon Theremin.
“The theremin is the cornerstone of electronic music, with a fascinating history,” says Bryan. “Dennis James does a spectacular job of presenting the science and artistry behind this out-of-this-world sounding instrument.”
Dennis James is a noted American multi-instrumentalist and preservationist, widely recognized for his mastery of the theremin and for reviving Benjamin Franklin’s glass armonica. He is also renowned for his historically informed live accompaniment of silent films and specialized concert performances across the United States and internationally.
