SPARK Museum Unveils New Exhibit: "Still Life to Reel Life A History of Image Projection"

The SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention is proud to announce the opening of a new exhibit, Still Life to Reel Life: The History of Image Projection, exploring the technology behind Movie Magic. This exhibit will be on display through Summer 2028 and has been developed with a number of community partners including Mount Baker Theatre, Pickford Film Center and local Collectors.

Still Life to Reel Life is an exploration of the technological developments that led to modern motion pictures and some of the world’s most iconic shared experiences. Many artifacts from SPARK’s collection are featured, along with select pieces from the Pickford Film Center’s collection, local collectors, and the Mount Baker Theatre.

This is the second exhibit to be on display in SPARK’s newest gallery which opened to the public in 2025. Curated by Museum employee Charlie Bryan, this exhibit is the latest step in SPARK’s efforts to share more from the vault and bring never before displayed artifacts to public view.

The exhibit opened to the Public on September 19th and will be in display through Summer of 2028. A schedule of accompanying programs will be announced shortly to be taking place throughout the run to the exhibit.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
